The Nose Knows

smell-legend1.jpg

Trumping the DI's Twin Cities Odorama for intensity is Gawker's New York City Subway Smell Map, created from reports sent in of odors, both horrific and sublime, encountered throughout New York's subway stations. The legend (above) really brings out the irony in Rodgers & Hart's song "Manhattan":

The subway charms us so
When balmy breezes blow
To and fro.
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street In July?

I don't know how to put this on the Rotterdam map but here are some smells that come to my mind. At the intersection in front of Now and Wow it always smells of flour. In the Waalhaven area it smells of cinnamon. Near the ARN, the garbage disposal factory at the south entrance of the Maastunnel it smells of garbage ofcourse. And on my balcony it smells of diesel.
